Cookie policy

What this website stores on your device, why, and how to control it. At present the answer is short: nothing that identifies you, and nothing that needs your consent.

Effective: {{LEGAL_TBD}}

What cookies are

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep, so it can recognise your device on a later visit. Related technologies — localStorage, session storage — do a similar job and are covered here too.

Cookies that are strictly necessary to deliver a service you asked for can be set without permission. Anything else, including analytics, needs your consent first.

What this site stores today

Your theme preference

When you switch between light and dark, we remember the choice in your browser's localStorage under the key "theme". It never leaves your device, is not sent to us, and identifies nothing about you. Clearing your browser storage removes it and the site returns to its default.

Nothing else

This site sets no advertising cookies, no social media cookies, and at present no analytics cookies. There is no consent banner because there is currently nothing to consent to.

Analytics, when we add it

We intend to add Google Analytics so we can see which pages are useful and where people give up. It is not installed yet, and this section describes what will happen when it is rather than what is happening now.

Google Analytics sets cookies that distinguish one visitor from another and record which pages were viewed. That is not strictly necessary to deliver this website, so when it goes in:

  • it will not run until you have agreed to it;
  • a consent banner will ask first, with refusing as easy as accepting;
  • you will be able to change your mind later from this page;
  • the cookies it sets, and how long each lasts, will be listed here before it goes live;
  • data is sent to Google, which may process it outside the UK — the transfer safeguard we rely on is described in our Privacy policy.

Until that is in place, no analytics cookie is set on this site.

Controlling cookies

Every major browser lets you see what a site has stored, delete it, and block future cookies. Those controls are usually under privacy or site settings, and apply whatever a site's own banner says.

Blocking storage on this site costs you only the theme preference: the site will work, but it will not remember whether you chose light or dark.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page whenever what we store changes, and before a change takes effect rather than after it. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
